Users receiving certificate errors for a CAS not set as RPCClientAccessServer

Hoping someone can help shed light on this.

We're setting up a new CAS with the intent of replacing the old one, and then retiring it. There is no CAS array (management decision), so from a CAS perspective the environment consists of one CAS the production users are utilizing (server 1), plus the newly built CAS which will replace it (server 2).

Users are reporting that when they launch Outlook, they're receiving a certificate error for server 2.

The RPCClientAccessServer attribute on all production mailbox databases is set to Server1. Just to be sure, I've run a script to check how many users are connected to each CAS, and every single one is connected to Server 1.

What I'm trying to work out is why the users are getting a certificate error for server 2 when Outlook starts, considering that none of them should be connecting to it at all. Obviously, we're going to put the correct certificate into place before we place Server 2 fully into production, but in the meantime, why are the users seeing the certificate error?

Feedback appreciated. :)
