We have tried everything to resolve this.
The KB 979744 bad patch was applied to the server at one time, someone else tried to fix it and we don't know what they did. We are trying to fix it now. We are unable to apply the hotfix patch found here.

When we run the patch it says there are no products installed that this applies too. I cannot find the patch listed in the add/remove updates list on the server. But the registry entries are there for it.

The 6.0.1.0 is the key identifying the bad patch, 6.0.2.0 is after the hotfix is applied but can't apply... :(
All the .net stuff is installed, has been repaired numerous times, and we just aren't getting anywhere with this. We read countless articles about this problem and uninstalling the patch is one solution but we can't because it's not in the list of installed patches. We can't apply the hotfix because it says it doesn't apply. What can we do?!?
Should I delete the registry entries relating to the 979744 patch? Will that allow me to reinstall the bad patch so we can hot fix it?? Please advise, our server is in a bad state because nothing will open without an MMC.exe crash and lots of services are failing/won't start.
